- Extreme Durability: These panels are made to last for decades in tough weather. Tempered glass can withstand heavy hail, low branches, and heavy rain without scratching or breaking.
- Always Charging: Since they are fixed to your roof, they collect energy whenever the sun is out, even while you are driving or parked at the supermarket.
The Disadvantages:
- The Setup: To install rigid panels, you need to drill holes in your van’s roof for the brackets, then seal the holes with a sealant like Sikaflex to stop leaks.
- Weight and Aerodynamics: These panels are heavy, usually about 8-12kg each. Since they sit above the roof on brackets, they can create drag and slightly reduce your fuel efficiency.

The Advantages:
- Ultra-Lightweight: A 200W flexible panel usually weighs under 4.9kg, compared to a rigid panel of the same size, which weighs 12kg, making it great for pop-top campervans or caravans with fibreglass construction where weight limits are a concern.
- Aerodynamics: Because they are glued flat directly to the roof, they create zero aerodynamic drag. From ground level, they are completely invisible, which is a massive bonus for “stealth” campervans parking in cities.
- No Drilling Required: You do not need heavy brackets. These panels are usually attached with strong glue.
The Disadvantages:
- Heat Degradation: This is their main downside. Solar panels get hot in the sun, which lowers their efficiency. Since flexible panels are glued flat to a metal roof, there is no airflow to cool them. This heat can shorten their lifespan, typically lasting just over 5 years instead of 20 or more years that rigid panels do.

Fitting Tips For Fixing Solar Panels To Your Campervan Roof
- If you are fixing to the roof with self-tapping screws or similar, fix them on the van ridges as these are the strongest points of the roof. I have found the best screw size for this job is 6.3 x 22mm or 5.5 x 22mm self-drilling, self-tapping screws. These are designed for sheet-to-sheet metal applications, making them suitable for securely fixing brackets to the roof skin.
- When glueing panels to the roof, instead of running straight lines, glue in a zigzag pattern for stronger adhesion. Lightly sand the surfaces of each face where the bonding will occur to ensure the glue gets a better grip.
- Use 2-3mm tile spacers evenly along the glue run and place something heavy on top until the glue is set. The spacers are just the right height for the glue to bond properly and prevent glue from being pushed out of the edges during setting. Before the glue sets, wipe along the edges with some wet wipes for a clean finish.
- Mount the panels in a location where you can route the cabling going in to the van behind or over a cupboard or wall panelling. This creates a much cleaner, unobtrusive entry point for the wires.
